village life

I grew up in a similar landscape back in my homeland, Alleppey, Kerala. There were abandoned fields used for rice crop. People used to let the cattle grace freely without any restrictions. Major resources of water for daily use were ponds and wells. When the rural development projects has been introduced the fields have flattened up and filled with gravel then built concrete houses on it. Trees have chopped down for urbanisation and the migratory birds have disappeared in search of new pastures. My memories turned to be sober.

When I walked around the villages in Poland and Lithuania I felt like I was living in my past glory!
Life felt so simple. Abundance of forest full of wild mushrooms and berries, vast carpet of farmland everywhere. Cattle and chickens wandering around freely, a tractor passing by, random appearance of a horse cart, farmers milking cows in the field etc. If you want to see the heart of a Nation please go to the countryside. There are still traces of life untouched by the noise and pollution.

Here is my depiction of it. Unframed watercolour painting on Saunders cotton paper.
Size 38 x 28 cm.
